IUI

The process typically begins with the woman undergoing ovarian stimulation to encourage the development of multiple eggs. This is followed by careful monitoring of the woman's cycle to determine the optimal time for insemination, coinciding with ovulation. In some cases, ovulation-stimulating medications may be used to enhance the chances of success.

On the day of the IUI, a concentrated and washed sperm sample is prepared in the laboratory. The sperm is then introduced into the uterus through a thin catheter, a process that is relatively quick and minimally invasive. By placing the sperm directly inside the uterus, the proximity to the egg is increased, improving the likelihood of fertilization.

Studies claim a success rate of 30% with a cycle of IUI. But it cannot have a role in male factor infertility or blocked fallopian tubes.

IUI is a less complex and less expensive assisted reproductive technology compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF

• Ovarian Stimulation:The woman is given fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries, promoting the development of multiple eggs.
• Egg Retrieval:Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve them from the ovaries. This is usually done transvaginally with the guidance of ultrasound.
• Sperm Collection:A sperm sample is obtained from the male partner or a sperm donor. The sperm is then processed and prepared for fertilization.
• Fertilization:In the laboratory, the eggs and sperm are combined to facilitate fertilization. The fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are monitored for a few days.
• Embryo Transfer:One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into the woman's uterus. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure.
• Implantation and Pregnancy:If successful, the embryo(s) implant in the uterus lining, leading to pregnancy. A pregnancy test is typically conducted a couple of weeks after the embryo transfer.
